Shopping centers, supermarkets, retail stores and local businesses are also all available in town, as is the Back Mountain Memorial Library. Misericordia, a four-year, Catholic, co-educational liberal arts university, sits on a 100-acre campus in Dallas. It became Luzerne County’s first four-year institution of higher learning in 1924. Besides academics, the school hosts community events, including the Pauly Friedman and Macdonald art galleries and the annual Under the Stars Summer Arts Festival.

In the 19th century, most living in the Dallas area involved farming or lumbering. Today you can still find small family farms and wooded areas throughout the community.
