Whether you're a Northeastern Pennsylvania native or are relocating from out of the area, Dallas, Pennsylvania, is definitely worth your time!

Dallas, which is part of Luzerne County's Back Mountain suburban area, is made up of Dallas Borough and Dallas Township. Dallas Township was officially formed in 1817 from land taken from Kingston Township. It was named after Alexander J. Dallas of Philadelphia, the 6th U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. Alexander J. Dallas was also the father of George M. Dallas, who served as Vice President for James K. Polk. Dallas Borough, in turn, was created by a charter grant in 1879 from land within Dallas Township.

Today, the township and borough are vastly different from what they were when settlers first came to the area in the 18th century. The quiet, suburban community was once home to dense forest and wildlife. Settling here wasn't easy, but the early people believed that the soil must have been of better quality compared to the valley since the trees here grew so tall. Despite the wolves, bears and other wild animals, settlers volunteered to clean up the "back of the mountain" country, which would eventually grow into a prosperous community.

Where you can find your own piece of quiet.

In the 19th century, most living in the Dallas area involved farming or lumbering. Today you can still find small family farms and wooded areas throughout the community. Deer are common to see in backyards and along roadways, and every once in a while black bears make their visits through neighborhoods. Dallas is the perfect combination of rural farmland, suburban development, and more importantly--peace and quiet. It is the pride of the Back Mountain.

A Town with Unmatched Community Pride

Ask anyone in Dallas why they love it, and you'll be sure to get all kinds of different reasons. There's something for everybody here, and there's a lot of community pride among residents.

Here are just a few of the many aspects that make Dallas so special:

The Dallas School District covers the Borough of Dallas and Dallas Township, as well as Franklin Township and Kingston Township. The community also has Misericordia University for higher education. Misericordia features the Pauly Friedman and Macdonald art galleries which are open to the public, as well as the annual Under the Stars Summer Arts Festival.

Dallas offers a number of delicious, locally-owned restaurants--whether you're feeling authentic Mexican food, Italian, seafood, pizza, salad, subs, or even hot dogs, you can find it nearby. Shopping centers, supermarkets, and retail stores are also all available in town, as is the Back Mountain Memorial Library. The library features the Slightly Read Bookshop and hosts the annual Back Mountain Memorial Library Auction in the summer.

The Back Mountain Trail is another highlight of the area. Originally built in the 1880s as a rail line to deliver ice, today the trail stretches from Lower Demunds Road in Dallas to Luzerne. Eventually, the trail should hopefully extend to Misericordia University and beyond.

The Lands at Hillside Farms, located in nearby Kingston Township, is a non-profit, historic, educational farm. It's a popular stop for homemade milk, ice cream, butter, and local honey, artisan cheeses, and organic vegetables. The animals on the farm, including sheep, goats, and calves, provide interest for both kids and adults alike.
