These have been everywhere lately.

Their claim to fame has to do with a combination of their attractive style and health benefits. Real ones—because there are some imitators—are hand carved and from Khewra, Pakistan mines, which are at the edge of the Himalayan mountains.

They come in lamps, tealight holders, and even decorative baskets.

Pink Himalayan sea salt is one of the world’s purest salts. It is believed to be made from mineral remnants from the original sea. It’s millions of years old.

So, why is it a lamp and should you have one in your home?

History of Himalayan Sea Salt

The craze started with cooking, and I must confess that I have a big bag of it at home and always use it in place of table salt.

The salt—a rock salt—comes from Pakistan; not far from the Himalayan Mountains. What I didn’t know is that the salt is believed to date back to the primal period—back when the Earth was created.

Whoa.

So what gives the salt it’s pretty pink color: minerals. Because of that, the color and design from one lamp to the next will be different—some more pink and some more orange than others.

Himalayan salt comes from the Salt Range in Pakistan and was untouched until 1849. It’s not officially determined how much salt is there, but estimates reach up to 600 million tons.

Health Benefits of the Himalayan Salt Lamp

While no scientific evidence exists, many people claim that they feel improvements in a number of ailments including allergies, arthritis, and even asthma. It is believed that these lamps remove pollutants, negative ions and electrosmog from the air.

Salt, in general, is known to have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties and removed airborne pollen. It is believed that, since salt attracts water, these lamps attract any in the air while carries pollutants. These get trapped in the lamp and the water evaporates from the heat, minus the pollutants.

As I’ve said before, there are no studies on Himalayan Salt Lamps to prove any of the health benefits people claim they have.

However, knowing the salt in general carries these benefits and that many people have experienced changes—plus, they’re really pretty lamps—I think these would make a great addition to any household.

There are also believed benefits to the color of the lamps. Color has a great power to effect moods, and the soft, orange-pink glow of these lamps are believed to increase energy levels and promote a better sleeping pattern.
