Are you tired of pledging yourself to a gym every single January, only to drop off a few months in? Maybe you’re tired of saying that you’ll spend less money because, well let’s face it: prices on everything are almost always going up.

Let’s try something new this year: a resolution for the home.

Breaking them up into monthly tasks is a much more manageable way to accomplish your goals, and it's great for those lacking in the attention span department (*cough cough*... me).

Here are a few resolutions to get you started and inspire you to refocus your yearly resolution. Tackle one a month, a few throughout the year, or one all year long. You know yourself best, so play to your strengths!

new year's resolutions

1: Make some energy-saving changes at home.

You can keep the goal small and focus on lighting, or make some bigger commitments throughout the year by replacing some of your larger appliances. You’ll be happy in the end when your bills go down a bit!

2: Invest in a home gym.

This is a more personal way to commit to the health resolution, and it will benefit everyone in the house! It can get tough to put on your workout gear when the cooler months come around, so having a home gym (and not having to brave the cold to get your sweat on) is a great solution to this!

3: Clean… regularly.

Cleaning can be one of the most annoying aspects of owning a home. You don’t just have to clean your bedroom and wash the dishes. You have to scrub, disinfect, vacuum, and dust multiple rooms. Regularly.

This task can become more manageable if you establish a schedule. Take a day early in the new year to map out a plan of attack per week or month. There are plenty of schedules you can find and/or adapt online!

NOTE: don’t forget to include the outside of the home, too!

 4: Remodel high-traffic rooms.new year's resolutions

Give a few rooms a new life by repainting and redecorating them! Start with high traffic rooms—such as the living room and kitchen—then move into bedrooms and bathrooms. You can do as many rooms or as few as you like, and even make plans to do a room a month (or every other month). You’re in charge!

5: Clean or replace carpeting in your home.

Adding in hardwood floors makes cleaning a bit easier (in my opinion at least) and adds value to your home. It will also instantly upgrade the look and feel of any room in your house.

6: Inspect the home for safety and take necessary actions.

You’ll want to check smaller things inside the house, like batteries in smoke detectors, to larger parts of the home, such as the roof. Again, some of these may lead to increasing the value of your home.

FACT: Adding a new roof can increase the value of your home between 15 and 40 percent.

Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions in mind that you’ll be using to better your home? We’d love to hear them!
