New homeowners often find themselves wondering how they can make a room look bigger without doing any major renovations. If you’re a new homeowner, or are moving from one home to another, you may be experiencing this first-hand.

Luckily, there are several ways you can make any space in your home look bigger without tearing down any walls. These techniques can either be used alone or together to enlarge the appearance of a room. While some methods can be used in any room, there are a few that are specific to a certain living space. So, let’s start with the kitchen.

Kitchen

Cabinets are one of the most common places to turn to when you want to make your kitchen appear larger. One method is to use glass doors on your cabinets, which will create depth by allowing the eye to see through to the back wall. Just beware of clutter so you don’t un-do the work you just did!

Another method to visually enlarge the kitchen is to paint the cabinets and walls the same color. The lighter the color the better, because light colors reflect more light than dark colors.

If possible, you can also install recess storage in your kitchen. This is a great way to add more floor space. Consider doing this for a pantry, and don’t be afraid to use those glass doors here, too!

Dining Room

If your dining room is smaller than your appetite, you might want to veer away from the typical four-sided dining table. A round table, paired with armless chairs or even benches, is a great alternative that will make the room look larger.

You can also invest in a collapsible table that will fold against a wall. This will give you more room when the table isn’t in use. If you go this route, use folding chairs that can also be collapsed and stored away or leaned against the wall.

Bathroom

Keep your décor one shade here, just like in the kitchen. White-on-white is great for a bathroom, but beige works well here, too. Again, light colors reflect light to make the space look larger.

Natural light will help to make your bathroom appear larger, especially if it can reflect off the bathroom mirror, so don’t cover windows with dark shades. Sheer shades and retractable blinds can give you privacy when you need it and light when you don’t.

Consider adding decorative mirrors to your bathroom as well. If they can grab natural light they will create the illusion of a larger room.

Bedroom

Paint your ceiling, dark colors are best, and keep your walls light. A dark ceiling will create depth and draw the eye up, creating height.

Installing shelving around the bed gives you room to store your things while also freeing up some walking space. This technique will provide you with both a bedside table and storage space, eliminating the need for additional shelving in the room.

You can also hang art and photos lower on your walls, creating more space between them and the ceiling to make the room look larger.

Living Room

One easy way to make your living room appear larger is to paint your walls the color of something that can be seen outside through the windows. So, if there is a dark green fence outside, dark green will unify the inside with the outside, breaking down the barrier that is usually there and creating a larger-looking room.

Also, consider using one large sofa, taking up just one wall, rather than multiple sofas and an armchair that will take up more room. This will give the room more walking space.
